New structure for more performance: optimizing geo structures in the North Baden and Black Forest region
For a supra-regional service provider in the print media sector – with an extensive portfolio including dialogue mail and catalogues – we carried out a large-scale restructuring of postcode areas and delivery districts. Our client relies on fast response times, high reliability, maximum flexibility and a clear cost structure. This is exactly where we come in: by introducing a clear, resilient logistics structure, we create the basis for measurably improving operational KPIs and keeping them stable in the long term.

The customer's initial situation
Serving more than 750,000 households, Medienservice Logistik Center GmbH is one of the key delivery partners in the North Baden and Black Forest region. A growing scope of services and additional delivery areas placed new demands on the logistics structure – a strategic replanning of the distribution area became essential.
Building a comprehensive data basis at household level
Planning district and delivery structures that work in day-to-day operations
Supporting implementation with prepared street segments
The goal of the project was to establish a high-performing, workable geo structure – especially in rural and complex regions. This gives delivery staff the best possible conditions to run their routes efficiently, reliably and well prepared.
Our approach
- Data management: Comprehensive preparation of the planning data created a consistent and valid basis for the entire district and delivery structure.
- District planning: Taking all relevant planning restrictions into account, an optimal district structure was developed.
- Planning restrictions: Planning followed clearly defined parameters: postcode boundaries, moderate route lengths for delivery staff, and consideration of relevant settlement structures and topography.
- Segmentation: Carefully prepared street segments support a smooth and rapid operational rollout.
- Visualization: A clear graphical representation of the new planning structure enables quick visual orientation and makes it easier to communicate the new areas within the organization.
“Our processes? Measurable and more efficient since FIEGE.”
Outcome of our collaboration
The joint project established a future-proof, workable delivery structure for the planning area. More than 22,000 street segments and over 1,600 districts across more than 100 postcode areas were planned precisely and clearly delineated.
The new geo structure ensures efficient and flexible operations: delivery staff benefit from clearly defined districts, realistic walking routes and optimal preparation of their deliveries.
This creates a stable foundation that sustainably increases the efficiency, flexibility and reliability of delivery logistics.
